Information on exchanging Russian Railways travel documents for tourists
In many cases, the carrier meets the traveler halfway and exchanges the ticket. However, in some situations, according to the rules established by the organization, this is not possible:
- If the ticket for the road is issued to a third party.
- If the ticket does not indicate a seat. This applies to all cases where a travel pass is purchased for a child under five years of age.
- It is not possible to change a pass if a child and an accompanying adult use the same ticket.
- Employees will not replace a travel pass if it was purchased outside the country and paid for by credit card.
- There is no exchange for international destinations.
Tickets for JSC Russian Railways
The company can change a passenger’s ticket in the following cases specified in the charter:
- if you need to change the departure date without changing the destination;
- when it is necessary to replace a child ticket with an adult one - with an additional payment of the full cost;
- change of service class - to a higher one or vice versa;
- In a high-class carriage, a seat change is required.
Is it possible to change a train ticket for another date? This question interests many travelers. If there is more than one day before the locomotive departs, you can exchange it for an earlier time. However, this only applies to passenger and express locomotives.
Is it possible to change an electronic train ticket to a different date?
By complying with the above conditions, the passenger will be able to arrange an exchange of a ticket with a change of date, even if the day of departure is determined to be an earlier date compared to the planned time of departure. The main condition here is one day before departure.
An exception is the opportunity to reissue a ticket for another type of carriage, even if there are less than twenty-four hours left before the train departs. If there is a difference in the cost of the exchanged tickets, then it is paid by the passenger or, conversely, returned to the buyer.
Ticket exchange cost
Note! The cost of replacing a travel ticket depends on the price at which it was purchased. The commission for exchanging a Russian Railways ticket is 192 rubles. 70 kopecks* This amount is deducted from the total cost of the purchased ticket. Commissions and service fees, for example, if the ticket was purchased not at the station, but at a travel agency or third-party site, are not refundable.
How to return Russian Railways tickets
Depending on when a person exchanges a ticket, the amounts for reimbursement are calculated and the refund period is determined:
- The fare is fully refunded if the passenger returns or reissues the travel document for another date, 8 hours or more before the departure of the locomotive.
- The cost of a ticket for Russian Railways OJSC and half the cost of a reserved seat are refunded, provided that the ticket is returned between 8 and 2 hours before departure.
- Only the cost of the ticket can be refunded if the document can be submitted or changed 2 hours before and 12 hours after departure.
For fast commuter trains operating in Russia, different tariffs apply when replacing with a different number or returning a ticket:
- More than 8 hours before departure - full price.
- From 2 to 8 hours before dispatch - 50%.
- 120 minutes before departure the ticket will not be accepted back.
How to exchange a purchased train ticket or refund its price within 5 days if the passenger did not travel by train to the stated destination? If a valid reason for missing a flight is documented—illness or an accident—the company administration will accommodate the traveler halfway. Upon delivery, a commission of 62 rubles* is charged.
Note! If the traveler chose to pay for the travel pass using a bank card, he must purchase a new ticket again. This is due to the fact that the funds will be returned to the card only a few days after submitting the corresponding application. This will take a maximum of 30 working days.
Exchange rules
Aeroflot - ticket exchange
If there are less than 60 minutes left before the departure of the train, and the tourist has completed electronic registration, in order to return the ticket, it is also necessary to fill out an application, which is submitted to the administration for consideration.
In some cases, a passenger wants to exchange an electronic ticket for its paper counterpart. This can be done at the ticket office of the railway station. The employee is required to provide identification of the passenger through whom the ticket was purchased, and information confirming the reservation and purchase online - this can be a document on a mobile device or a printed electronic ticket document.
E-ticket
When submitting a ticket, the returned document will appear in the sales system after 2-3 hours, and if a passenger wants to buy it again, but for another traveler, you need to constantly monitor the site. It should be remembered that the desired ticket can be purchased by any other user.
Note! If a ticket was issued for several people, for example, for an excursion group, a refund is possible for both the entire order and a specific electronic ticket from it.
In cases where a tourist purchased a travel document in advance, but subsequently changed his surname - marriage, divorce, upon boarding he will need to present a new passport, a page in it with the details of a previously issued passport (which are indicated in the travel document) and, in the case of a change of surname , - original marriage certificate.
If a passenger notices that there are any inaccuracies in the entry of personal data in the travel document, it is necessary to pay attention to the conditions under which the travel document is considered valid. There should not be more than one mistake in the passenger’s personal data and one incorrect number in the passport number. Cashiers will not be able to correct a typo that has been made.
Important! If a passenger needs to change the entered information, he can ask for help from the conductor, who has a special terminal. This service costs about 200 rubles*. The traveler will be issued a new travel document. As for errors related to the date of birth, they are acceptable on the ticket if this does not affect the age fare.
Is it possible to change something on the ticket after payment?
According to the rules of JSC Russian Railways, corrections cannot be made to a paid electronic railway ticket.
I want to reschedule my trip or change my seat in the carriage. In this case, return the old ticket and buy a new one. How to return a ticket A ticket can also be exchanged for another, but only at the box office. Technically, this will be the same refund - the money will be returned to the bank card with which the ticket was purchased within 7 to 30 days.
The exchange will cost only 60 rubles less than the return (the difference in the amount of the service fee) regardless of the amount of the ticket itself. This can be done in two ways:
- Personally go to the Russian Railways ticket office in advance with your passport and order number or boarding pass. You will be given a new ticket, the cost of the service will be 223.7 rubles. According to the rules, it is possible to change personal data only on a JSC FPC ticket, but there are known cases when the data on tickets of other carriers was corrected at the ticket office. Check with the box office on site.
- Contact the director of your train before it departs. Your personal data will be corrected at a special terminal on the train. You will need to pay a fee of 200 rubles. These rules apply only to FPC JSC trains.

Read more about the exchange There are errors in my ticket In order for you to be put on the train without any problems, the ticket should not contain more than 1 incorrect letter in the last name, first name, patronymic and 1 incorrect number in the passport number. How to change a train ticket: in what cases is the ticket reissuance procedure permissible?
In this case, the answer to the question of how much it costs to change a train ticket is that you need to pay the difference in fares for the cheap and expensive categories of cars, since the amount of the commission for reissuing a ticket is insignificant.
Regular and electronic tickets can only be reissued for domestic Russian trains. For international trains there is no such thing as “changing a train ticket”. Such tickets can only be returned under appropriate conditions. If we talk about reissuing railway tickets (not to be confused with a refund!), it can only be done at railway ticket offices.
Therefore, regardless of the purchase method, take your ticket or its electronic copy and go to the station to reissue it. All types of reissuance of railway tickets are carried out with the deduction of established fees (usually low). The concepts of refund and reissue of a ticket should not be confused.
Nuances of exchanging a ticket purchased at the “Both-Way” tariff
Train ru: buying train tickets
Many travelers are faced with the problem of exchanging a ticket for the Sapsan locomotive purchased at the Round Trip fare. This is due to the fact that several situations may arise:
- Registration of ticket return in the “there” direction. It is impossible to do this. A tourist can only buy a new ticket, both one-way and two-way.
- Exchange of a travel document in the return direction. Returns and exchanges take place as usual at the station ticket office or on the website.
- Exchange of two-way ticket. First you need to hand in your travel document for the “back” direction, after which you can return the “there” ticket.

How to change a Russian Railways e-ticket
Exchange of tickets, including electronic ones, is provided by Russian Railways services. The passenger only needs to return one ticket and purchase another. The procedure is not difficult if the ticket is changed for a date later than the previously booked day.
Please note! If you need to choose a date earlier, you will have to take into account a number of key points:
- there must be at least a day left before the day of departure to which the date is planned to be changed;
- the train for exchange must be passenger or fast; such exchange of tickets for express trains is not permitted.
Reissuance of tickets may require payment of a fee, taking into account the conditions for changing the information. You also need to remember that some ticket information cannot be changed. These include the passenger directly and the points of departure and arrival.
Exchange at the station ticket office
You need to contact the ticket office of the railway station where you purchased the ticket, for example, in Moscow to Belorussky or another station. The passenger must have an old ticket with him, which he will change in the future, and an identity card. The cashier will issue an application on which the tourist must sign.
What methods does Russian Railways offer to change a ticket and get a refund?
- If the ticket was paid in cash, the difference in cash will be issued immediately.
- If payment was made by bank card, within a month. If during this period the money has not been received on the card, you must contact the bank branch. Next, a claim statement of the ARN number is drawn up. This number is required to determine the movement of funds in the account.
Note! If the user wants to exchange a ticket for a third party, a notarized power of attorney is required. But, as practice shows, cashiers do not require this document when changing a travel document.
Personal account of JSC Russian Railways
If you need to exchange an international electronic ticket, you can use the services of the official Russian Railways website or the international ticket office.
When a traveler has already left for another country and wants to change his ticket back to another date or time, he must go to the ticket office at the station with a travel document and identification. If the ticket was issued for travel to countries with a visa-free regime, you can contact the ticket office in Russia within 180 days from the date of departure of the train and present:
- seat return form;
- a ticket that the traveler did not use;
- passenger identification document.
If the ticket was issued for travel to foreign countries, you must contact the international ticket office in Russia within 1 month from the date of departure of the train and provide:
- ticket with a mark of non-use (indicating the date and time of the passenger’s request);
- application for refund.
If a traveler has issued an international ticket in a Business class compartment for two people, but wants to return only one travel document, he will not be able to do this. Refunds and subsequent exchanges are made only if both tickets are returned.
What to do if you need to send another person in your place?
As stated above, it will not be possible to re-issue a purchased ticket to another person, but this is legal. In fact, there are loopholes that you can take advantage of while losing a small amount.
The only possible way to send another person on the same route in your place is to buy a new ticket and return the old one; unfortunately, Russian Railways does not yet provide other methods.
Important! If you need to return your ticket, be prepared to lose some money, and the amount will depend on how late you decide to do it.
After you have returned your ticket, you can register another person for this vacated seat; the main thing is to have time to purchase this ticket before it is outbid. Then this improvised method of reissuing a train ticket will be impossible. And the trip will most likely be cancelled, since tickets are sold out very quickly and there may simply not be any empty seats.
Of course, this process is very inconvenient for passengers, but Russian Railways does not yet provide a re-registration option. It would be much easier for both the carrier and passengers if a small commission were introduced for re-issuing a ticket from one person to another. Then it would be possible to avoid all these manipulations with returning the ticket and buying a new one, and also significantly save money on commissions.
Try to be a savvy passenger so as not to find yourself in unclear situations, and also study your rights in order to avoid unpleasant “surprises” before and during your trip by rail.
