In which carriages are the carriage of animals allowed?
Transporting animals on a train requires compliance with many conditions: certificates are required, small animals are allowed to be transported only in a cage, and for a large dog you will have to buy the entire compartment. More information about transporting animals:
- on long-distance trains
- in "Sapsan"
Compartment carriage
This carriage usually has 32 or 36 seats. In a compartment, the lower seats are odd and the upper seats are even. The compartments are isolated from each other and are locked. The compartment has a mirror, a table, hangers and hooks for clothes, as well as a night lamp for each passenger. In a single-decker carriage you can sit freely on the top bunk in the compartment, but in a two-decker carriage it is uncomfortable because the ceiling is low. There is a niche under the ceiling for luggage (available only in single-deck carriages).

Econom-class train
The carriage has 9 compartments with 6 berths each: two upper, two lower and two side. There are no doors between the compartments; they are all connected by a common corridor. All the lower places are odd-numbered, and the upper ones are even-numbered. Places 37 to 54 are “sides”, they are shorter than places in a block of four. Seats 33 to 38 are located near the toilet and may be uncomfortable. The reserved seat has a lot of space for luggage - there are compartments under the lower seats and third shelves. Due to the presence of a third shelf in the upper place in the reserved seat, it is uncomfortable to sit.

Restaurant car on a Russian Railways train: menu of the restaurant car, in which car it is located
Russian Railways dining car
Most long-distance passenger trains have a dining car - a special type of car where, instead of standard seats, there is a buffet and tables where you can eat.
Typically, a dining car can accommodate up to 40–45 passengers; another 2–3 people can sit at the bar counter (buffet). Tables are set in advance and passengers are served by waiters. All offered dishes with prices are indicated on the menu.
The dining car has a kitchenette equipped with a stove. Hot food is served here. There are also refrigerators in the room where food and semi-finished products are stored.
You can find out whether there are such cars on the train for which you purchased tickets, in the table at the end of this article.
Dining car and buffet car: what are the differences?
Some trains have buffet cars instead of dining cars (on the Russian Railways website they are also called cafe-buffets). The difference from dining cars is that buffet cars have several passenger compartments: usually 4 with seats for 16 people, but there may be two additional seats next to the conductor's compartment. The rest of the carriage space is used for a buffet. There are two tables and a section for the barmaid.
In the cafe car, unlike the restaurant car, there is self-service. Usually only snacks and salads are prepared here, and you can also buy cookies, buns and chocolate for tea.
Usually there are cafe-buffets on trains that travel relatively short distances. Currently, buffet cars are located in high-speed electric trains (Sapsan, Lastochka), as well as in long-distance trains. For example, there is a cafe-buffet on the Moscow-Bryansk and Moscow-Kostroma trains.
In which car is the dining car located?
The restaurant car or buffet car is always located exactly in the center of the train. The reason is that there is only one such carriage for the entire train, and it needs to be positioned so that all passengers have equally convenient access. Most often, the dining car is located next to carriage 9.
Restaurant carriage menu on Russian Railways trains
The menu in the dining car varies depending on the route and train. The choice is usually not very rich, since storage and preparation space is limited.
The menu includes appetizers, salads, and main courses, including soups, as well as desserts and various drinks. There is also alcohol, usually beer and wine. Often in the dining car you can order a set breakfast, lunch or dinner, which includes a standard set of dishes. This is more profitable than buying dishes separately.
Your food will only be prepared after you place your order, so be prepared to wait a bit. Usually the waiting time does not exceed 20 minutes.
If you just want to have a snack, you can buy nuts, chocolate or chips from the bar.
Some trains have signature dishes and special menus, for example, for vegetarians. On the OneTwoTrip website you can find the menu of the Sapsan bistro car.
Prices in the restaurant carriage
Prices for meals in the dining car depend on the train and direction. Passengers often complain that the cost is too high; they usually have to pay 30-40% more than in a regular cafe.
Be prepared to pay from 300 rubles for breakfast (this price includes a sandwich with cheese and butter, porridge, a boiled egg, a slice of bread and tea). A set lunch will cost at least 400 rubles, the price includes salad, soup, hot dish and drink. A separate bowl of soup costs about 200 rubles, and a hot dish costs at least 350.
Pay for your order at the cash register located in the bar area. It is better to check in advance whether it is possible to pay with a bank card: not all trains have terminals, and in some regions they may not work due to communication interruptions.
Opening hours of the dining car
According to Russian Railways rules, the dining car must operate all day with two breaks. Each break lasts 30 minutes, during which time the room is cleaned and food is accepted at the stations.
If the train is on the road for less than a day, the operating hours of the restaurant car or cafe car are set by the director of the car. The train manager notifies passengers about the operating hours via radio.
The dining car stops serving passengers 30 minutes before closing.

Meals on Russian Railways, which are included in the ticket price
In the Welcome section to the question Russian Railways Electronic Ticket. Indicated “Car type/class of service - COUPE (2К) УО”.
The Ministry of Finance is against accounting for food costs included in the price of a train ticket. But if food is included in the list of services, and the cost of the service in the ticket is shown only as a total cost, you can write off all expenses.
Seats 33 to 38 are located next to the toilet. These are some of the most uncomfortable places in the carriage. It is uncomfortable to sleep here, because... passengers often go to the toilet, incl. and for changing clothes.
Car with seats (electric trains)
Such trains include “Swallows” and some express trains. First class is more comfortable than the others - there are fewer seats in the carriage, greater distance between the rows.

Is it possible to pre-order meals at SV?
Typically, payment for the standard menu is made by the passenger when purchasing a ticket. He can select specific dishes after boarding the carriage directly from the conductor or in advance, using a special service on the Russian Railways website.
However, you should not fully count on the fact that guaranteed food will completely solve the issue of breakfast, lunch and dinner on the road. Russian Railways offers standard meals once a day, no matter how long the train’s route.
Luxury carriage (SV) and RIC (2-seater compartments)
The old designation for a luxury car was SV, which means “sleeping car.” It has 8-10 compartments with 2 berths, both located below. Sometimes there are suites with vertical seating. Each shelf resembles a soft sofa - there is a comfortable backrest for sitting. In terms of the level of service, a luxury car is better than a compartment car - a luxury car usually has a button to call the conductor, air conditioning, and on some trains there is also a TV.
RIC - international carriages. Usually they are a little better than those running within the country, since new cars are traveling abroad.

Who prepares food for sleeping cars
Guaranteed meals, which are an integral part of the service provided in sleeping cars, are prepared and supplied to the carrier by kitchen factories with which outsourcing contracts are concluded. Food is usually delivered ready-made and already packaged.
Since contracts for the supply of food are concluded with different providers in different directions of train movement, the quality of food may differ, and quite significantly. Often, the taste characteristics of dishes are completely independent of whether the train is branded or not.
Despite the differences, there are uniform standards that relate to service and provision of guaranteed food, introduced in 2012.
Soft
The soft carriage resembles a hotel room. Each compartment has 1 or 2 beds. If there are two seats, then the lower one is a soft sofa that converts into a bed 120 cm wide. The upper seat is 90 cm wide. The compartment also has a table and an armchair, and there may be a TV and a minibar. They provide you with a hot breakfast and a shower kit, bathrobe and terry towel.

Railway ticket offices – Meal service on trains
When paying the fare, the Russian Railways carrier usually includes meals for passengers in the price of its services. Any of the carrier's clients can order additional food and select dishes from the expanded menu to suit their taste. Let's talk about universal meals on trains, as well as the prices of breakfast, lunch and dinner if requested for a fee.
Universal food set
A universal supply scheme is provided for travelers traveling on long-distance trains. They are offered breakfasts, business lunches and dinners. The price of the service is charged at the time of ordering travel documents.
Food for passengers is prepared in specialized factories, which supply them to the carrier company under an outsourcing agreement. All food, as on airplanes, is carefully packaged and delivered in protected containers.
How to order power supply
To request breakfast, business lunch or dinner, you can contact the conductor or directly to the dining car. The variety of supplies directly depends on the duration of the trip for a particular traveler. Thus, if the transfer lasts more than 24 hours, he can count on being served a full lunch.
Providing travelers with food follows a certain pattern.
Thus, the time period allocated for breakfast is from 7 to 10 am; if lunch is included in the transfer price, it is served from 11 to 15 o'clock. The time period set aside for dinner is from 16:00 to 21:00.
In addition to the universal kit for the client, at his request, the necessary plates and cutlery, napkins and drinking water will be provided.
The prepaid menu on Russian Railways trains is periodically supplemented with new dishes.
Composition of a regular breakfast
The menu offers two variations of breakfast for the compartment:
- with freshly prepared porridge of your choice - rice with dried apricots or oatmeal. Coffee with cream or tea, bread, and several types of cheese are also brought to the table;
- with scrambled eggs and stuffing with cheese and vegetables. Additionally, the set includes cold cuts, tea or coffee with cream, and bread.
Composition of a standard lunch
There are two lunch variations available to choose from:
- salad with cabbage and fresh herbs accompanied by chicken noodle soup, a side dish of rice and stewed pork with vegetables. The set is complemented by bread, confectionery for tea or coffee with cream;
- salad of fresh vegetables and herbs “Vitamin” combined with cabbage soup made from fresh cabbage with the addition of chicken and sour cream. The set is complemented by a second item - boiled pasta with fried chicken and bread. Dessert includes a confectionery product, tea or coffee with cream.
The business lunch consists of a main course, a second course and an appetizer.
Dinner composition
By evening you can also order one of the available sets:
- salad with carrots and grated apple, seasoned with sour cream, buckwheat porridge with dressing in the form of stewed chicken with creamy gravy. Dessert is served with confectionery, tea or coffee with cream;
- fresh cabbage salad with cucumber, boiled potatoes and sausage. For dessert, a sweet product, tea or coffee with cream is given.
All these food options are available to travelers traveling in a compartment. For business class, a sweet dessert is also served; a variety of non-alcoholic drinks are available, including mineral water. Business class passengers can also choose from six types of alcohol, including spirits and beer.
Where can I get information on prepaid meals?
When purchasing a train ticket, a universal meal set is already included in the price. It can be changed at the passenger's initiative. You can change prepaid meals no later than 3 days before departure. You can decide on the menu on the Russian Railways portal after logging into your account.
For passengers planning to travel by high-speed trains, the supply mode can be changed no later than 2 days before departure. To change your prepaid meal option, simply follow these steps:
- go to the Russian Railways portal and log in to your account;
- click on the line with standard supplies;
- indicate the appropriate menu composition.
Immediately after leaving the station, you can contact the conductor and order prepaid food.
What is supplementary nutrition?
When transferring by Russian Railways trains, you can take advantage of additional supplies. With this service, you can count on receiving auxiliary food throughout your trip.
The service can be ordered when issuing a travel pass at the terminal ticket office or from the conductor while driving. If a ticket for the trip has already been purchased, you can pay for auxiliary meals no later than 3 days before departure.
If you choose a service while on a trip, the choice of items on the menu may be scarce.
There are several types of auxiliary food supplies:
- so-called full board with breakfast, lunch and dinner;
- half board with breakfast and dinner served;
- only breakfast, only lunch or only dinner with an available selection of specific menu items.
The menu includes standard dishes, as well as special items for children and passengers who prefer vegetarian food. The number of meals is calculated based on the duration of the trip. When requesting non-essential food supplies, the passenger can decide on their own diet.
About the price of food on Russian Railways trains
Standard food is already included in the service. However, you can refuse it at the stage of issuing a ticket.
As for non-basic meals, they are paid separately; the cost of food depends on the chosen class and type of carriage. This service can be canceled no later than 24 hours before departure.
Refunds are made at the request of the client; a service fee for the service is not charged when registering or canceling it.

U1 services on a Russian Railways train: what is included, meaning
Few people know what is included in the U1 services that are provided to travelers on Russian Railways trains. This marking means serving passengers on long-distance trains who buy seats with guaranteed meals.
Power supply guarantee U1
Food offered to railway passengers is prepared by specialized companies and contractors. They cooperate with Russian Railways and regularly supply ready-made meals in special plastic containers to preserve the freshness of food.
U1 services are not provided in reserved seat sleeping cars. Meals are offered only in high-comfort carriages, and the price of food is included in the amount you paid at the ticket office or online for the ticket.
There are several types of services with different numbers of meals:
- U0 – without food;
- U1 – service with one meal;
- U2 and U3 – services with two and three rations, respectively.
You can find out which category your seat in the carriage belongs to using the information printed on the ticket. Service U1 and other types of services are prescribed in the 7th line of the document.
Cars with access to U1
The letter "U" means "service", the number 1 - the number of meals. Therefore, by choosing the U1 service, you can count on being fed once during the journey. Moreover, the duration of the trip does not matter - be it 5-6 hours or 2 days.
As already mentioned, the U1 service is available only in carriages with an increased level of comfort. Accordingly, inside there is an air conditioner, a dry closet, and there is also the possibility of transporting animals.
On tickets, such carriages are marked SV or RICH. They have double open boxes with bunks located below. There are no upper seats available. Also, meals according to the U1 standard can be provided in 1M type cars. 1B, 1E, 2B and 2E.
Also included in this category are some luxury carriages, in which the seats are located vertically, in the form of comfortable sofas. Luxury class seats also have a button to call the conductor, and some carriages even have a TV.
What is included in U1 services
U1 services include one meal during the entire trip. The list of dishes included in the basic menu depends on how many hours you will spend on the road and what half of the day you will have to deliver containers of food.
- If the passenger stays in the carriage for less than a day, he is offered breakfast or dinner.
- If we are talking about a trip lasting more than a day, then the diet includes lunch with a first course.
The menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner is standardized, but when purchasing a ticket, the passenger can choose between the available options. For example, between breakfast and dinner.

Food standard in Russian Railways - what is it?
If you buy a train ticket, you immediately pay for standard meals. However, it can be changed to something else. You can select the type of menu 72 hours before the departure of the train through your personal account on the official website of Russian Railways. You can choose your meal plan for the Sapsan and Lastochka trains no later than 48 hours before the train’s departure.
How to choose a power type:
- go to your personal account and click on the link “Meals: Breakfast-Standard”;
- indicate the type of menu you need.
You can order food from the conductor immediately after boarding the train.
Additional meals are ordered for the entire duration of the flight. It can be issued at ticket offices or on the Russian Railways website, as well as on the way from the conductor. You can place an order for additional meals at the railway ticket office with a previously purchased ticket, but no later than 3 days before the train’s departure. If you order additional meals from the conductor, the menu selection may be limited.
There are three power modes to choose from:
- full board (breakfast, lunch, dinner);
- half board (breakfast, dinner);
- only breakfast or lunch or dinner, with a choice from the menu.
The menu includes a variety of dishes, including vegetarian and for children. The number of food rations required by a passenger for the entire route is calculated automatically based on the number of days of travel on the train.
When purchasing an additional meal service, the passenger determines the meal plan independently.
