Barcode decoding: country of origin. First digits of the barcode

What does an ean 13 barcode look like?

In order to find out the country encrypted in the barcode, check the code for originality, enter 13 digits in the verification window located below:

Enter 13 digit barcode:

Barcode 4623720660024 is correct, country or barcode type: Russia class=”markirovka-form-new”>Check another barcode

The result will be displayed directly in the window being checked. The program will tell you the real/fake code and which country the code belongs to.

In addition to automatic verification, you can use the manual code verification method. But first let's figure it out:

  • whether there is an information load for the code numbers;
  • What does checking the number give, is it possible to verify the authenticity of the product?

What information does a barcode contain?

What is encrypted in a barcode

  1. Regional affiliation of the organization (country). Codes from 200 to 299 can only be used within the organization, for their own needs (they are not available for sale), numbers from 977 to 999 belong to books, coupons, etc., all other numbers are country codes. Which code and which country it belongs to can be found out from our online check and from the table below (at the very beginning there is a search by encrypted number and by country):

  2. Manufacturer's registration number.
  3. Product code.
  4. Check digit (the scanner and online check are checked against it, it is also necessary when checking the barcode independently (manually).
  5. Additional field (free, optional field, sometimes you can see the free zone sign - “>”).

Attention! The country of manufacture may differ from the country indicated on the barcode. Very rare.

The code contains no information about cost, weight, composition, etc. Detailed information is downloaded from the store database using a barcode scanned by a scanner at the checkout. Read about where and how to find out about a product by barcode at the end of the article.

We are interested in the last digit, since we are checking the code for authenticity. To check we will use two methods:

  • online service (automatic);
  • manual method (mathematical operation with code numbers).

Code check for EAN – 8 and EAN – 13

An example of a German barcode on goods and its verification

Example for EAN-8

Example for EAN-13

The use of an 8-character code required the refusal to include some data in the labeling. In general, the following information is entered in EAN - 8 and EAN - 13:

  1. Code of location and country in which the seller or manufacturer of the labeled product is located. For Germany, this code should be from 400 – 440, i.e. 402,430,439, etc. will do. For EAN-8 it takes 2 digits, for EAN-13 it takes 3 digits.
  2. The next 5 or 4 digits indicate the product manufacturer code. The length is determined by the specific production or its country of location.
  3. In EAN - 13, an additional 4-5 digits are allocated to indicate the characteristics of the product: weight, color, properties. This usually includes information that allows you to distinguish one type of product from another without any problems. For example, enter data for medications with different contents of the active substance.
  4. The final digit, in both cases, is the control value. It is made only for setting up the reading equipment.

Manual method

The code being checked consists of 13 digits; we divide the digits according to the algorithm of even and odd occurrence in the code.

How to check a barcode for authenticity yourself without a program

Let's start the calculation:

  1. We add the numbers from even places: 9 + 5 + 2 + 2 + 5 + 4 = 27.
  2. We multiply the result from point 1 by 3: 27 x 3 = 81.
  3. We add numbers from odd places (the last digit is not included in the calculation): 5 + 9 + 3 + 7 + 7 + 7 + 1 = 32.
  4. We add the result of point 2 and point 3: 81 + 32 = 113.
  5. We leave the last digit from the result of point 4 and subtract this number from 10: 10 - 3 = 7.
  6. The result of the calculation is the number 7, which is similar to the control digit (last digit) in the barcode. This means the code is genuine.

Barcode decoding

The bar code (BC) contains information about the product and its manufacturer.
The most common are the 13-bit European code EAN-13 (European Article Numbering) and the fully compatible 13-bit UPC code used in the USA and Canada. In Russia, mainly 2 types of barcodes are used: 13-bit codes of the European EAN system, introduced in 1986, and encoding systems for settlement and payment documents compatible with EAN.

How to calculate a barcode checksum

Today it is quite difficult to find a product that is not marked with a barcode. We all know that it encodes basic information about the product, and that its presence facilitates the work of manufacturers and sellers in automated accounting of goods. We know that barcodes look different: with different lengths of strokes, number of numbers, and even without them at all. We even know that the 13-digit code used by the European Association of Product Numbering (EAN) is mostly used. And we also know that the first 2-3 digits indicate the country in which the product is registered, and the last digit of the code is the control one.

And this control figure is obtained only when the previous twelve are reliably applied. In fact, the correspondence between the check digit and the calculated one indicates that the barcode is genuine, and the product has been certified by EAN and was produced legally.

Enter the numbers in the field and click the Check barcode

Of course, we can check the authenticity of the barcode using special online services. But it’s much more interesting to calculate the check digit yourself. This can be done like this:

1.Add up the numbers in the even
places of the code
9+7+0+7+0+1=24
2.Multiply the resulting amount by three24*3=72
3.Add the numbers in the odd
places of the check code (except for the check digit itself)
5+9+2+7+1+0=24
4.Add the numbers obtained in steps 2
and
3
72+24=96
5.Drop tens96-90=6
6.From the number 10, subtract what you got in point 510-6=4

The result must match the check digit

Offline barcode checker

We made an excel table with barcode verification. You can download the table and check the authenticity of the code without the Internet.

How to use a code review table
No internet needed! Enter the code in the verification field. The result will appear in the #VALUE field!

The authenticity of the number does not mean that the product is original. Please take this into account! It is quite easy to fake a barcode; inserting the desired country of manufacture is not difficult. Therefore, check the products for other distinctive features. Our website is full of detailed photo and video instructions on how to distinguish a fake from an original.

Online check

Previously, ordinary consumers did not have access to an international database of organizations, so verification was difficult to access.

With the advent of gadgets and the dissemination of information on the Internet, portals containing information about certain products have become available. This allows you to quickly and reliably find the necessary data.

barcode-list.ru - On the platform you can read information about products by their barcodes. The project has more than 500 thousand contributed items.

The portal is also convenient for sellers who can enter the names and codes of their products into the database.

The data is constantly updated, the search is very fast, and decryption is easy.

www.gs1ru.org - the database provides information about the product. We decipher them using the entered barcode. The interface here is more complex. In addition to how to find the product you are interested in using a well-known barcode, the site also offers other services.

Online verification can be done using numerous mobile applications. This is a free method open to any mobile phone user.

Manufacturer country code

The country of manufacture code has two or three characters, and the company code has four or five characters. Products that are large in size may have a short code consisting of eight digits - EAN-8. #13 #13As a rule, the country code is assigned by the International Association EAN. We draw the attention of consumers to the fact that the strange code never consists of one digit .

Sometimes the code printed on the label does not correspond to the country of origin stated on the packaging; there may be several reasons.

  • First: the company was registered and received a code not in its own country, but in the one where the main export of its products is directed.
  • Second: the product was manufactured at a subsidiary.
  • Third: perhaps the product was manufactured in one country, but under a license from a company from another country.
  • The fourth is when several companies from different countries become the founders of an enterprise.
